The best way to make cornbread

Our Air Fryer Cornbread is savory, sweet, and tender with a little bit of crunch on the outside.

This air fryer cornbread recipe is written as gluten-free! I don’t eat gluten, so all of my recipes either are gluten-free or can be easily adapted to be.

Ingredients List

ingredients for cornbread in the air fryer each in separate bowls on a countertop
  • Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour – I like Bob’s Red Mill 1-1 in the blue bag. If you don’t need this recipe to be gluten-free, you can use regular all-purpose flour.
  • Gluten-Free Cornmeal – Yellow cornmeal is perfect for this recipe. Most cornmeal should be gluten-free, but check the labels to be sure.
  • Baking Powder – Cornbread is a quick bread, so instead of yeast we’ ‘ll use leaveners to give it rise.
  • Baking Soda – The combination of baking powder and baking soda gives our bread the perfect fluffy, tender texture.
  • Salt – Just a bit of salt brings out all of the flavors.
  • Egg– One large egg holds the dough together.
  • Granulated Sugar – This recipe is a little bit sweet, but not overly sweet.
  • Buttermilk – I love the tang that buttermilk adds, but any dairy or non-dairy milk can be used in its place.
  • Melted Butter – This adds moisture and deliciousness to the cornbread.

Cornbread is traditionally topped with honey and served with soups, stews, or chili. Try this Tofu Chili, or this Four Bean Instant Pot Chili. Vegan Pumpkin Soup would also be delicious with a side of cornbread!

You can enjoy cornbread with any of your favorite meals. Try it on the side with Air Fryer Catfish or Air Fryer Fried Chicken.

Consider using this cornbread as a recipe ingredient, and whipping up some cornbread stuffing.

Recipe FAQs

What kind of cornmeal should I use?

Cornmeal comes in a few different varieties. I like yellow cornmeal because of the traditional color that it gives the finished bread. You could use white cornmeal too without any issues.

Avoid using premixed cornbread mix for this recipe, or corn flour (masa) that is used to make tamales.

What kind of baking pan can I use?

You can use any oven-safe bakeware that fits inside of your air fryer basket. For this recipe, I’m using a simple round 6-inch cake pan.

    1. Hi Arlen! It depend on the size of you air fryer. We used a 6 inch cake pan, and I think that will work with most air fryers.

I don’t remember the exact brand we used, but something like this cake pan on Amazon should work!
