Is there anything better than homemade bread? The smell, the butter as it melts onto the tender crumb, and the crisp crust. It’s perfection. This Air Fryer Bread recipe is the simplest way to make homemade bread 🍞
Perfect Homemade Bread Without the Oven 🍞
We have found that an air fryer is a great tool for making all sorts of baked goods. It gives you a crispy texture on the outside, but a soft crumb on the inside. For more air fryer baked goods, check out our recipe for Air Fryer Chocolate Glazed Donuts or Air Fryer Pumpkin Spice Bites.
List of ingredients 🥚🧈🧂
- Milk and Water: I love the combination of milk and water for sandwich bread– it adds a bit of richness but still gives a light and fluffy crumb. We’re using warm milk and water because yeast is more active when the dough is warm.
- Butter: Butter also adds richness and delicious flavor to the bread.
- Granulated Sugar: Granulated sugar is food for the yeast. Don’t worry– this isn’t a sweet bread.
- Instant Yeast: Yeast is what makes our bread rise. I’m using instant yeast so if you use active dry, make sure to bloom it in warm water with granulated sugar (for about 5 minutes) before adding the rest of the ingredients
- Flour: Flour gives the dough structure. I’m using all-purpose flour but bread flour would also be great if you have it on hand!
- Kosher Salt: Kosher salt seasons the bread so it isn’t bland.
- Egg Wash: An egg wash helps the top of the bread become golden brown and shiny.
Steps to make bread in the air fryer
No mixer? No Problem!
If you don’t have a stand mixer, don’t worry! Just make steps 1 and 2 in a large bowl with a wooden spoon or a bread dough whisk (not a regular batter whisk). Then knead the dough by hand for 5-8 minutes and continue with the recipe as written.
- Add the water, milk, butter, granulated sugar, and instant yeast to the bowl of a stand mixer and whisk to combine.
- Next, add the flour and salt to the bowl. Use the dough hook attachment to mix the dough on low speed until it forms a ball.
- Increase the speed to medium-low and knead the dough until it is soft and tacky. If the dough sticks to the bowl at any point while kneading, just sprinkle in another tablespoon of flour.
- Lightly oil your hands and remove the dough from the hook and bowl. Shape the dough into a smooth ball.
- Lightly grease a 6” round pan with butter or nonstick cooking spray. Place the dough in the pan and then set it in a warm place to rise until doubled in size.
- Brush the top of the bread with the egg wash and place the pan in your air fryer basket. Air fry at 340ºF/171ºC for 15 minutes, or until the top of the bread is golden brown.
- Then carefully run a knife around the edge of the pan and remove the bread. Place the bread back into the air fryer and cook until the bottom is lightly browned and the bread sounds hollow when you knock on it.
- Allow the bread to cool completely. Then slice and enjoy.

FAQs
This may sound crazy…but tap the bottom of the loaf and it should sound hollow. If you have a thermometer, it should register 200 F internally when done.
