Rich and perfectly cooked French Toast is a snap to make in your air fryer! Air Fryer French Toast will be a family favorite, and it’s easy enough to make on even the busiest mornings.
Recipe Overview
I love the simplicity of making all of our breakfast favorites in the air fryer. It means fewer dishes, less mess, and less to think about when I need to cook for my family but haven’t had my latte yet!
Frozen foods like waffles, french toast sticks, and Uncrustables in the air fryer are easy enough for the kids to make themselves in the morning, but when I really want to give them a treat before school, I get up a few minutes early and make this Air Fryer French Toast recipe.
Topped with butter and plenty of syrup or jam, this easy air fryer breakfast is one of my favorites, and I know it will be the same for you and your family.
Did you know that you can make regular Toast in the air fryer too?! This machine can truly do so many things.
Ingredients
- Bread – The best bread for air fryer french toast is a sturdy, thick bread that won’t fall apart when you dip it in the milk and egg mixture. I recommend picking up a loaf at the bakery rather than using standard white bread for this recipe.
- Eggs and Milk – To make the custard for French toast, whisk these two things together!
- Vanilla Extract, Cinnamon, and Salt – To give French Toast its classic flavor.
- Oil Spray – A little bit of oil on the air fryer basket will keep the bread from sticking. Avoid using spray oils with chemical additives, and look for a natural version. This way, you won’t damage the coating on your air fryer basket.
Steps to Make
- Add the eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt to a mixing bowl.
- Whisk to combine.
- Dip the slices of bread into the custard mixture on both sides and let any excess drip off.
- Spray the basket of your air fryer with oil, then place the bread in the basket in a single layer (you may need to cook the French toast in two batches).
- Air Fry the French toast at 350ยฐF/180ยฐC for 6-8 minutes, flipping it over halfway through the cooking time.
- When finished, the French toast should be golden brown and no longer wet. Serve with fresh berries and maple syrup!
Tips and Tricks๐ช
- Choose the right bread. While you can technically make French toast out of any kind of bread, I think the best type is a heavy, dense loaf like Italian bread or a large French baguette sliced diagonally. Brioche and Challah also make delicious French toast. You can also try this recipe with homemade bread that you made in the air fryer!
- Adjust as needed. Since all bread is different and all air fryers cook a little bit differently, you may find that you need more or less time to cook this recipe. Always keep an eye on your food as it cooks!
- Feel free to use slightly old bread. While you don’t want to use totally stale bread for French toast, this is a great way to revive bread that is just past its prime.
- Dip quickly! Oversaturating the bread with the egg and milk mixture can cause it to turn mushy.
- Try different toppings. While butter and syrup are traditional, you might also enjoy topping French toast with pumpkin syrup, Instant Pot apple butter, Nutella, fresh berries, or whipped cream.
I came across this recipe for Peanut Butter Crunch French Toast the other day. I can’t wait to try this flavor in the Air Fryer Next!

FAQs
We see this question a lot, and the answer is definitely yes! Use this recipe to make homemade French toast in the air fryer, or cook frozen french toast sticks in the air fryer. Both come out amazing!
It should only take 6 to 8 minutes to cook French toast in the air fryer using this method! Be sure to flip the pieces over halfway through, and plan for extra time if you will need to cook the bread in more than one batch. For four large pieces of French toast, I do two cooking cycles so that I don’t overcrowd the basket, and so the total cooking time is about 15 minutes.
You sure can make homemade french toast sticks this way! Slice your bread into strips before dipping it into the milk and egg mixture, and cook the strips as directed. You may need to reduce the cooking time by a minute or two to avoid overcooking the smaller pieces of French toast.
I prefer to use heavier, thicker bread for this recipe and usually pick up a loaf from the bakery. But, you can use any type of bread that you have! Regular sandwich bread is soft, and so it tends to be softer when used for French toast.

- You may need to air fry french toast in batches so that you can cook each piece without overfilling the basket.
- If you are cooking your French toast in batches do not dip the bread until it’s ready to be cooked. It will get too soggy while you wait.
- Also, if you are cooking in batches, you can reheat the first batch of French toast in the air fryer for 2 minutes so that everything is hot at the same time.
